Bill Bradley’s arsenal of shots included an uncannily accurate hook shot. Here he scores in his final Ivy League game, an 81–71 win over Penn. He was National Player of the Year and led Princeton to the Final Four, where he set a scoring record that still stands and was named Most Outstanding Player. Goodrich put on a ballhandling clinic in the second half, leading the fast break and scoring on layups, hook shots, and jump shots. He totally controlled the play, and three Michigan players (including Buntin and Darden) fouled out trying to stop him. Gail set up shop at the foul line during the final 10 minutes and sank 18 of 20 free throws. He scored 42 points and the Bruins easily held off Michigan to win their second consecutive national championship, 91–80, becoming just the fifth repeat champion in the 27-year history of the NCAA Tournament. Russell had played well, scoring 28 points, but his teammates just couldn’t get him the ball inside against the press. Kenny Washington’s tight defense on Russell and his 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting were major factors for UCLA, which got just three points from the injured Erickson.

Goodrich’s 42 points were a championship game record, exceeded in the next 50 years only by UCLA’s Bill Walton, who scored 44 points against Memphis in the 1973 NCAA championship game. Yet, despite having played the game of his life to lead his team to the NCAA title with a record-breaking performance, he did not receive the Most Outstanding Player trophy for the tournament. That trophy went to Bill Bradley. But Goodrich got the trophy that mattered most and got his picture on the cover of Sports Illustrated, scoring two of his 42 points.15
